Building and construction equipment > Asbestos, a few notes to know more.Although it used to be very popular till some years ago, asbestos is responsible for causing mesothelioma cancer, lung cancer, asbestosis, and other dangerous affections.
What are you about to discover here, about asbestos, will benefit you greatly. Asbestos is a common mineral that was used in so many ways until some years ago as a construction material, thanks to its heat-resistance properties. Generally speaking, there are mainly three types of asbestos. With this in mind, the most prevalent of them is the serpentine group also called white asbestos, made of chrysotile (from wikipedia...is an asbestiform sub-group within the serpentine group of minerals... Chrysotile varies in color from gray-white to golden yellow to green. It has a hardness of 2.5-3. The three varieties form the fibrous members of the serpentine group and have been extensively mined as asbestos)
Asbestos exposure and tobacco smoking have a synergistic effect, greatly increasing the chances of contracting lung cancer.
The second kind of asbestos is the amphiboles group or blue asbestos that is made out of crocidolite (from wikipedia... Amphibole defines an important group of dark-colored rock-forming inosilicate minerals... and generally it contains ions of iron and/or magnesium in the structures). The third type of asbestos is amosite, or brown asbestos (from wikipedia... it is a commonly commercially-used synonym of grunerite first used by Hall. It may also be ferro-antrophyllite. The amosite referred by Peacock is fibrous actinolite or cummingtonite). Asbestos was discovered some years ago to be the culprit of some lethal and toxic diseases like mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. The danger caused by asbestos materials cannot be denied even if it is also true that asbestos becomes hazardous in many circumstances when the fibres are freed into the air, where they are likely to be inhaled or ingested by humans. Asbestos fibres are not a thread if the appliances used are left intact. This substance has been used so frequently in the past decades not only in the industrial world but also for house building and common appliances, putting people at risk in their own household when handling those devices.
The air, drinking water and even some consumer products contain small amounts of asbestos.
The reason for its popular use was its capability of resisting high temperatures. This substance was resistant to cold, fire, noise, dust, corrosion and so on. It was only when it was too late and the harm was done, that asbestos in materials was at last considered to be the cause of many diseases. They could appear after about 40 years following an infection, in most cases, and this is probably why the risks were only known after asbestos material had been extensively used. Other resources
